About Me: A Journey from Shadow to Light
Welcome to “Healthier Than You,” a platform that marks a pivotal turning point in my life. For over 25 years, I’ve journeyed with Type 1 diabetes—a journey of profound realizations, personal transformations, and a newfound purpose to guide others through similar challenges, much like a university for life’s most practical lessons.
My earliest understanding of diabetes was shaped within the walls of our home, watching my sister navigate her own tumultuous path with the condition. She unwittingly became a mirror for me—a reflection of what could be if one allowed the condition to take control. In striving to be healthier than her, I inadvertently set a low benchmark for myself, mistaking mere avoidance for genuine health management.
But life has a way of revealing deeper truths. Wrapped in denial, I lived under the guise of being slightly better than the flawed example before me. I clung to this as a defense mechanism, excusing inaction and complacency. The wake-up call was jarring, arriving amidst the global stillness of a lockdown and a personal mental breakdown. I was forced to confront the grim future I was scripting, a path eerily similar to my sister’s.
It dawned on me that our paths weren’t as different as I’d convinced myself. We were both lost in our struggles, choosing different vices but sharing the same destructive attitude. So there I was, following the crowd, trying to blend in, ignoring my health and hiding my disease. Bad eating habits, way too many drinks, not enough exercise — I was ticking all the wrong boxes. But then, it hit me. This wasn’t just about diabetes. It was about how I was living my life, period. As I emerged from the shadows, I realized that concealing my diabetes and hiding behind a facade of normalcy served no one—least of all me. My healing began with openness, confronting my disease head-on, and learning that every conversation wasn’t an attack but an opportunity for advocacy and growth.
Redefining what ‘Healthier Than You’ meant was a turning point. It was no longer about comparing myself to others; it was about surpassing the person I faced in the mirror each day. It was a commitment to bettering myself in every conceivable way.
This platform, “Healthier Than You,” is where I share the totality of my experience—from the missteps to the milestones. It’s about embracing the relentless nature of diabetes and turning it into a relentless pursuit of health. I want to offer the guidance and support I wish I had, fostering a community where openness and shared strength replace isolation and fear.
Living with diabetes is indeed a relentless pursuit, a marathon without a finish line. Yet, it’s within this endless journey that I discovered the power of resilience and the strength that comes from community. My sister’s story, as heart-wrenching as it was, became a catalyst for my own transformation and, ultimately, for the creation of this platform.
“Healthier Than You” is about more than managing a chronic condition; it’s about managing life in all its complexity. It’s a holistic approach to wellness, integrating diet, exercise, mental resilience, and the latest medical insights and technologies. While technology plays a role in enhancing our health journey, it’s the human element – our choices, our resilience, our community – that remains at the heart of this platform. It’s about continuous learning, adapting, and finding sustainable practices that work for you.
So, I invite you to join me in the ethos of “Healthier Than You”—not to be healthier than someone else, but to surpass who you were yesterday. Let’s embrace personal growth, informed choices, and daily habits that lead to a healthier, more fulfilled existence.
Today, I stand before you as an advocate, educator, and fellow traveler on this path. I am the Dean of my own life’s university—a university where the curriculum is life itself, and the lessons are drawn from real-world experience. If you’re feeling lost, remember: it’s never too late to find your way. I am proof that you can rise above, turn your life around, and start a journey to be ‘Healthier Than You.’
