Overcoming Exercise Barriers with T1D
January 15th, 2024
Hey there, HTU family! Let’s talk about exercise – it’s not everyone’s favorite activity, and sometimes it can feel like a real chore, right? But there’s something empowering about conquering those stairs without losing your breath or finding that perfect fit in your favorite clothes. It’s about feeling strong, inside and out, and not letting T1D define our limits.
Now, I won’t sugarcoat it; it can be tough to get moving, especially with the extra considerations T1D brings. But think about it this way: avoiding exercise? That’s the real punishment. Deep down, you know the drill – it’s about staying ahead, not just for the sake of routine, but for the triumph over every challenge T1D throws your way. And that starts with small, consistent steps.
Take it from Darren Hardy’s “The Compound Effect”: those tiny, daily choices add up to massive changes over time. So I began with what I could manage – a humble five pushups. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. Instead of berating myself, I chose to celebrate each small victory, each additional pushup, each day I kept at it.
Yes, there were days filled with self-doubt, days when I questioned if my efforts were even worth it. But then, I decided to look beyond the immediate struggles, to envision a healthier me, to set goals that resonated with who I wanted to become. This shift in perspective wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.
For anyone striving to get fitter or to bounce back into healthier habits, remember that action beats inaction every time. Don’t let T1D or anything else convince you that you’re not in control – because you are. And it’s never too late to start. Maybe you can’t change the past, but you can shape your future.
I remember a high school visit from an alumnus who had become a Marine – the very picture of transformation. I had idolized the idea of that metamorphosis for myself, a dream that seemed shattered by my T1D diagnosis. Subconsciously, this disappointment nudged me into a victim mindset, one where I blamed my condition for the dreams I believed were out of reach. It’s only now that I recognize that the real barriers were the limiting beliefs I had set for myself. Acknowledging this, I began to channel my aspirations into personal fitness, increasing my pushups, adding sit-ups, and creating new benchmarks for myself – a personalized adaptation of the Navy SEALs fitness standards.
Discipline stems from routine, from making those non-negotiable decisions that set the tone for everything else. For me, it began with defeating the snooze button. A small win, but a win that made all the difference.
By marrying this mindset with clear, achievable goals, I gave each day purpose. I found peace in my early morning workouts, clarity in my commitment to health, and excitement for the future.
So let’s get to it. Set your alarms, lace up those shoes, and let’s embrace the journey together. Remember, T1D doesn’t take breaks, and neither do we. It’s about building a lifestyle that acknowledges our unique challenges but doesn’t let them hold us back. Let’s keep pushing, learning, and growing – one step, one pushup, one day at a time. Together, we’re not just overcoming barriers; we’re building bridges to a healthier, happier us.
